Sour Garden - The Greenhouses

The wonderful world of Horticulture

Did you know that I'm a registered horticulturist?
I don't work in the field, but I remember a lot of my care for plants and I'm sure I have my notes somewhere around here.
As I remember I'll write down what I know and put it here for easy access.

Hort Basics - What?

Horticulture is the study of how a landscape in general works, as opposed to the zoomed-in scope of plants that Botany gives. In Horticulture, one has to understand the soil, the location, the fauna, every little thing to ensure the success of the landscape.
I'll try to simplify it as much as I can for the process of explaination, so please supplement what I have on this page with what you can look up for yourself.
I work in the Pacific Northwest, so my information is different from if you live in Rhode Island or Quebec or Argentina.

Hort Basics - Soil

We gotta go from the ground up.
Soil in any landscape is as important as the plants itself. There's three important components of soil:

  • Soil composure, being the size and quantity of the grains of particulate in a sample of soil,
  • Soil pH, being the amount of readily available hydrogen in the composition,
  • Soil nutrients, being the amount of correctly-oriented Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium in the soil.
  • Each is just as important as the last. Later, you'll find my notes on each particular component, but as of this details block, this is all you get.
